Fall Prevention Deserves Your Attention

Senior Center to Host Fall Prevention Workshop to Help Community Remain Independent

New Hartford, NY:  The New Hartford Senior Center will be hosting a Fall Prevention Workshop, “How to Prevent Falls and Remain Independent” on Tuesday, December 14th @ 11:30 AM at the New Hartford Town Hall, located at The Orchards (Former Gander Mountain), 8635 Clinton St, New Hartford, NY 13413.  Erica Maxam, MSPT and Judy DiCioccio, PTA from COAST Physical Therapy, will be presenting on how to reduce risk of falling to allow community members to remain safe and independent.  They will offer a FREE fall risk screening to all in attendance, which will include standardized gait and balance assessment tests to determine if any individuals are at a high risk of falling.  Those who choose to participate in the fall risk assessment will be given a form to take to their physician, which will include results of the screening, for appropriate follow-up.

According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “1 out of 4 older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor.”  In addition, 1 out of 5 falls cause serious injury, such as a broken bone or head injury, which may make it difficult for a person to get around, perform everyday activities, or live on their own.  There are simple steps one can take to prevent falls and decrease their risk of falling.  The CDC developed the STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries) initiative, which offers a coordinated approach to implementing fall prevention programs in the community and includes educational materials to help reduce fall risks, which will be distributed at the workshop, as well.

The Fall Prevention Workshop will cover facts about falls, including how falls can diminish one’s ability to lead an active, independent life, but, most importantly, that most falls can be avoided. Attendees will learn what conditions (risk factors) make one more likely to fall and what can be done specifically to prevent falls, such as talking to healthcare provider about one’s risk factors to determine if any modifications are necessary, beginning a strengthening/ balance training program and making home safer by removing clutter/ tripping hazards.
